SMART Goals vs DUMB Goals
Do you have any goals? If not, then create one from now on. Goals are important because it can help you to keep motivated to do something. On the other hand, it also can make you down or demotivated. Let me share you two approaches that you can use to define your goals which might help you to keep motivated instead of negative feelings.
SMART Goals
This type of approach is really familiar. You were recommended to define a goal that specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and time-bound. Let’s use example to make it clearer.
Specific
- “I want to be rich” → “I want to have much money”
Measurable
- “I want to have much money” → “I want to have 3 million dollars”
Actionable
- “I want to have 3 million dollars” → “I want to have 3 million dollars, so I need to have salary income at least 250 thousand dollars per month”
Realistic
- “I want to have 3 million dollars, so I need to have salary income at least 250 thousand dollars per month” → “Since now I only have 20 thousand dollars per month, I need to increase my skills to get promotion / build a small business so I can increase my income at least twice from current state”
Time-Bound
- “I want to have financial freedom at least before I’m going to 30 years old, and I am 28 years old now, so I need to fight for having income at least 250 thousand dollars per month when I am 29 years old”
DUMB Goals
D: Dream-Driven or Destiny-Driven — Thinking about your dreams beyond your normal scope of reality. The big, magical things! Your life’s work!
U: Uplifting — You are so thrilled about what is ahead you want to do it now! It’s connected to the dream!
M: Method-Friendly — You can maneuver the goal easily, and you’re able to identify habits around the goal that make it possible!
B: Behavior-Driven — You tie in your goals with your behaviors to solidify it as a part of your life. Treating it like a habit will eventually make it one!

Personally, I also love this kind of goals. We can easily dreaming here. We can specify our goals no matter how long, how big is the scope, but it would connected with our passion, our loves, our enjoy when we were doing something. People around you sometimes categorize people into “optimistic vs realistic vs pessimistic”, and for you who using this approach somehow judge into optimistic.
Hmm, I didn’t said it was wrong, but sometimes it’s just judging people and make other people’s down and decrease their confident to pursue their dream. Take their words as an evaluation for yourself, at the same time you also need to maintain your confidence that you might fulfill your dream some day.
Instead of thinking SMARTer, maybe start thinking a little DUMBer.
Hopefully it’ll helps and you interpret it correctly~ Goodluck!
